Semester two reflection
Out of the four “Habits of a Mathematician” my strength within the generating ideas category would be despite my missing work, formulating a plan. I find myself good at coming up with a plan to get work done, I find that they are usually realistic and fair although actually executing the plan is another story. For example my plan to pass Dan's class was very well put together. I have found my biggest weakness being identifying and applying appropriate mathematical tools. I Have a hard time with recognizing what tool I need to use for what problem even if i have learned the content and if told what to do I would know how to do it. An example of this is on most explorations when Dan gives us an equation or a technique to use, I always forget the second I get home.
I would use for my strength within the “Communication Thinking in a Clear Accessible Way” would be joining on quieter people to the conversation, with the perspective of me being the most awake in the morning so I sometimes try to wake the group up by getting louder or commenting on how everyone needs to awaken from their slumber already and get to work. My weakness in this category would be restating a problem in another form to build on the idea, once I understand something it hard for me to find new ways to make it make sense to me for example the POWS would always challenge me with this.
For my biggest area I need growth in would be in the category “Recognizing and Resolving errors” because I have a hard time looking at the problem to counter it with another example. I rarely ever feel the need to generate a new idea from a logical error. I don’t usually see my paper long enough to be able to catch and correct flaws. I also really need to work on precision and detail, I have a hard time with going slow and taking my time to do it right.
While looking through the “Reflecting and synthesizing” I decided I need to grow by figuring out how the problems we do in class relate to the real world. I do see where they are but I don't see where you need to apply them into everyday life. Although, if I really understand a topic or a method I will be able to explain how it work and why it is correct.
